The
regulations for customs clearance of artworks in Italy are rather
complicated with each region having its own regulations. In addition
to the regional regulations, the Fine Art Ministry has a special
section to monitor and approve the movement of artworks between
Italy and other EU countries
Either
an Export License or an Export Permit, which are valid for 12
months, is required for all works of art which are over 50 years
old. It can take up to 40 days for the Permit or License to
be issued.
Very
important or significant works of art can only be exported temporarily
and must have authorization from the Fine Art Italian Ministry
(MCBA) also known as the Bella Arte. This authorization takes
about 90 days.
