ICEFAQs** Security & Supervision

What’s the difference between security and supervision ?

As a rule Security means that an outside contractor (maybe the local police, maybe airport security or a local approved security company) will be on hand to see that the shipment is safe and secure during transit or transshipment. These people are trained in security matters – they are generally not trained in art handling.

It can also mean that the goods are held in a high security area or building prior to and after transport.

Supervision, on the other hand, means that someone who is trained and proficient in all aspects of art handling and load restraint will be on hand to ensure that the shipment is handled in accordance with those requirements.

What does it mean when I am asked whether I need security or supervision when a shipment makes a transfer mid-transport?

If you have a shipment that is being transferred from one aircraft to another or from one truck to another your art logistics agent may ask you whether the shipment requires security and / or supervision. (See above)

Essentially you are being asked whether your shipment requires special security or supervision services (See question about Security and Supervision for more information about these terms). This service may be required for a shipment for a number of reasons including:

A:
the crate/s (have) has special handling requirements
(e.g. directional freight, top load only etc)

B:
it is of especially high value

C:
your insurers have stipulated special security and/or handling
requirements.

The level of access to the tarmac and aircraft varies from airport to airport. Your ICEFAT agent will be able to advise you what services can reasonably be provided for your shipment.
